The Ramblers' Association, Registered Charity 1093577, Company Limited by Guarantee, Registration No 4458492.

Our aims are "to encourage walking, to guard the Rights of Way network, to strive to gain access to all uncultivated land and to protect the beauty of the countryside."

Northumbria Area of the Ramblers' Association has a membership of some 2800. The Area consists of the "Groups" listed in the left margin. All these Groups organise walks for their members, using private cars, public transport or hired coaches. Their programmes are listed on this website and in the booklets issued to all members, and can be reached by clicking the Groups' names in the left margin. The length of the walks is often stated in the programmes, but if you are looking for short walks of less than six miles, please click "N.Short Circuits". If you are in your 20's or 30's click the appropriate heading in the left margin. The Northern Family Walking Group offers walks for those with young children, but all are welcome.

New members are always welcome, and we are more than happy to have you come on one or two walks before you actually join to see whether you enjoy our walks and our company.

If you wish to sample a walk, please contact the secretary of the Group concerned.

BE SUITABLY EQUIPPED

Conditions on walks can vary with the terrain and the weather, which is often unpredictable. In a few minutes rain can turn a firm path into a quagmire and, when walking on a hill-top a pleasant summer breeze can become an icy wind. Please be prepared. It is recommended that all participants on organised walks wear stout footwear, preferably walking boots and carry a rucksack. Carry waterproof and warm clothing (don't wear jeans), sufficient food and drink for your walk, map of area, compass, whistle, first aid kit and, in winter, a torch. In remote or rugged areas a survival bag or blanket should also be carried. Though it is hoped that you will never need this, it is reassuring to know it is there. Most outdoor shops sell them for a couple of pounds and they weigh very little.
